Myths, Facts, and What to say when patients bring up common concerns about the COVID vaccine?:

o I’m worried about side effects.

  • The side effects are not dangerous and don’t last very long (maybe 2-3 days at most). Most people who have side effects experience a sore arm, tiredness, sometimes light chills. Over 12million people worldwide have already received the vaccine and no one has died from receiving the vaccine.

o I’m worried the vaccine will make me sterile.

  • The vaccine cannot make you sterile!

o Can’t the vaccine give me COVID?

  • This vaccine is safe and very effective at keeping you from getting sick with coronavirus. It cannot give you COVID.

  • Even if you have some side effects, it does not mean you have COVID.

o It was developed too fast to be safe.

  • The COVID vaccine has followed the same process required for all other vaccines, many of which you likely have taken. The COVID vaccine process was able to move faster because the world invested in it all at once, which meant more funding and people willing to be part of testing.

  • Since this vaccine is so important, states like CA and NY actually created additional separate bodies review the vaccine. They all separately came to the same conclusion that the vaccine is safe

o It’s too early on for me to get it. I’ll just wait and see how it goes for others.

  • Over 12million people worldwide have already received the vaccine and there have been no deaths due to the vaccine.

  • I have received the vaccine and so have most of my colleagues. We are recommending it to our parents and families as well.

o It’s against my religion.

  • Religious leaders of all faiths encourage you to get vaccine

o Doesn’t it change your DNA/track you?

  • The vaccine does not change your DNA and does not contain tracking devices

o I don’t trust vaccines/pharmaceutical companies/the government/the medical system.

  • There is a long history of racism and mishandling of vaccine testing in the medical system and it makes sense that would lead to mistrust and questions. At the same time, we are dealing with a deadly pandemic that has actually affected our Latinx and Black communities more than others. Right now, science shows that the best way to keep us all safe and to help our communities is vaccination.

o I had coronavirus, why do I need to get the vaccine? Is it safe to get the vaccine if I had coronavirus?

  • After you recover from coronavirus you have antibodies in your body that protect you from getting it again for a few months. But they wear off quickly and you can catch it again as soon as 3 months later. The vaccine helps your body make a different kind of antibody that lasts much longer.

  • We just ask that you wait until your isolation period (usually 10 days) is over since you aren't supposed to leave your home during the time you are contagious.
